My dad was a pothead. Well, he still is, and mostly always has been. He smoked since high school, back when he knew Smashing Pumpkins before they were Smashing Pumpkins and just some kids from Carol Stream. I didn’t know, had no idea, that my dad went anywhere near drugs, especially since they were Bad. DARE was in full swing in the 90s, and he watched all the PSAs with me on TV as a kid. I didn’t know why the smell of weed as an adult brought me the feeling of nostalgia of listening to music with my father or watching movies or playing video games with him while he smoked from a small pen sized pipe. Tobacco, he said, sometimes I smoke loose tobacco. Whenever I was around weed with friends as an adult, I’d be shot back to that room the same way others think of grandma’s house with freshly baked cookies.

I asked him when I was very young why I was named Sabrina. I was most likely lamenting over the fact that I had a weird name, this was even before Sabrina the Teenage Witch was on TV, let alone the public conscious so I was most likely 4 or 5. Why not Jennifer? There were four of them in my class. We could use a fifth, I reasoned.

He had a prolific dream (see: drug related) before I was born, he said. He met me before I was born in a dream, around the same age as the non-dream Me asking the question. Given the circumstances — a pregnant wife who had the normal, boring name Kaitlyn picked out (around six Kates and variants in my class) — he asked me what my name was.

The child, Me, Sabrina, proudly told him my name.

I was not named after a character in a show or movie or book, a celebrity, not even a relative. I was named Sabrina because my dad got a little too high and had a weird dream.
