Jamie — Flash Non-Fiction (Rough)

Jamie was my doll when I was a child, replaced once when I was too young to remember, so technically, I am speaking of Jamie II. Jamie I was unfortunate to be dunked in a bathtub and her fabric body was destroyed as I tore her apart. Both dolls, thought to be the same, were named after my favorite cousin, the one who could understand my speech impediment and made me feel special. Jamie was maybe three years older than me, I think, at least. Maybe five. She wasn’t doing as well last I heard. How is she now?

I wonder what I did with Jamie II, the doll. I can’t seem to remember: Is she sitting in a box at my parent’s, just unable to be let go and forgotten?

Jamie II was not my friend but an extension of myself, never leaving my hands for the longest time. I couldn’t afford to get her new clothes so she usually had a cotton nightgown, softening her Cabbage Patch Doll ™ iconic hard plastic face with chubby cheeks, staring blue eyes to match my own, with a curled smile with their tongue sticking out in a playful way. Is anyone here even old enough to remember Cabbage Patch Dolls ™? Their weird hollow skulls that flopped around the soft fabric stuffed with cotton that was their bodies, hair made of yarn like fibers, their ever staring eyes? It was something of the 90s. The cartoon show they tried to sell off with the dolls flopped, too. I couldn’t even enjoy it as a child.

I remember wanting bangs as a child, but my mom didn’t let me cut my hair, so I cut Jamie II’s hair then. Then, I no longer wanted bangs, so naturally, I cut Jamie II’s bangs off where the yarn was melted inside, down to the plastic skull. I’d braid the rest of her yarn-like hair, clip them, arrange them, in ways I could not with my own.
